Registering and managing devices

Xweather Protect Xcast Add-on, Xweather Optimize

Note: Device management capabilities are available with the Xweather Protect Xcast Add-on option and with Xweather Optimize.

Device management capabilities let you to add new devices, check your devices, check device status, restart or remove devices remotely, set device location and adjust linear correction for gas and particle air quality measurements.

Registering devices

If your device is not visible in the portal, it means that the device has not been registered to your account. Register the device manually.

For registration, you need:

  • Credentials to your Vaisala Xweather Insight account (see the email sent to you when ordering your device or station with Vaisala Xweather Insight)

  • Device serial number

  • Installation location

  1. Select + Add > Device.

  2. Fill in the following information:
    - Device type: Choose from the list of options.
    - Serial number: The serial number is printed on the device, for example A1234567. For BWS500, use the serial number of EGW501. For AWS810 Solar Edition, use the serial number of DMU801.
    - Display name (Optional): Choose a unique name that helps you identify the device.
    - Device Location: Add the latitude, longitude, and altitude from the mean sea level of the device or select the location on the map.

  3. Select Save.

Check that the device is displayed in the devices list and data from the device is available on the map and measurements pages.

Checking my devices

The devices page shows the devices that are part of your subscription.

The following information is included:

  • Devices: List of devices registered to your account shown with the device name and serial number.

  • Last reported: Time when data was last received from the device.

  • Status: Device status. See Checking device status below.

  • Device: Device to which other devices and sensors are connected or a standalone device, for example, Vaisala Data Management Unit DMU801, providing the communication to the cloud service.

  • Components: Devices and sensors that are connected to one common device providing the communication to the cloud service, for example, Vaisala Weather Transmitter WXT530 connected to Vaisala Data Management Unit DMU801.

  • Location: Device latitude and longitude.

  • Last connected: Exact date and time when data was last received from the device.

Checking device status

Select Devices from the top navigation menu (hamburger icon), to see your devices.

The device status is indicated with an icon in column Status. The status values are:

  • Device is online and sending data as expected.

  • Measurements are rejected due to suspicious values. See Measurement data quality control in Viewing and downloading measurements.

  • Device is registered, but measurements have not been received for the past 2 hours. See Troubleshooting and FAQs.

  • Device has not been registered or activated. See Registering devices above.

For the components, the following values are possible:

Restarting or removing device

Only admin users can restart or remove devices.

A restart may be needed after updating the device or when there are issues with the device.

  1. Select Devices from the top navigation menu (hamburger icon)

  2. Select the device.

  3. Select Restart at the top right.

The restart interrupts the measurement and observation data flow. After the restart, check the status of the device or devices and that data is flowing.

Device may need to be removed when changing the device location or alias name.

  1. Select Devices from the top navigation menu (hamburger icon)

  2. Select the device.

  3. Select Delete at the top right.

Setting device location

If you move a device, update the location information to reflect the new location. For this,

  1. Select Devices from the top navigation menu (hamburger icon) 

  2. Select the device.

  3. Select Edit at the top right.

  4. Fill in the following information:
    - Device Location: Add the latitude, longitude, and altitude from the mean sea level of the device or select the location on the map.

  5. Select Save.
